CQC Jargon Nominclature & Theme

It might help CQB's credibility with a more mature audience if some of the English jargon and nomenclature used was technically correct. For example: no True Combat game has ever had any 'clip' fed weapons, only 'magazine' fed weapons have been offered.

Similarly rather then referring to a level of body armor as 'Tank', why not use NIJ Standard-0101.06: I, IIA, II, IIA, II, IV; or 'Light Tactical Armor', 'Tactical Armor', and 'Breech Armor'?

Along a related line, it would be a positive move to loose the slang 'Perk' -- it's a word Infinity Ward got from the Activision Marketing Department that's colloquially used and applied to bonus benefits Sales People receive in the U.S. that don't get reported for taxes. While this fits perfectly with the sort of Casino/Arcade theme of 'Special Prizes' as rewards for killing Infinity Ward was trying to tie into the Modern Whorefare games; I'm not sure this is this an image any knowing Author that's not intending capitalize on children's naivety wants to run with...

As the CQB Author is Deutsch, and all things English and U.S. Military are grossly over-exposed, done to death (too often of late in a not very favorable light); I would very much enjoy it if CQB were a Deutsch theme mod. This would obviate many tedious issues for the Author as the work would all be in his native language (with English subtitles, and the occasional English explative), save resources of limited development time, and give CQB unique feel/atmosphere, and original theme to go with its new design direction.

The GSG9, and KSK are as, if not arguably more elite then their U.S. counterparts, have the 'cool factor' of not being over-exposed (outside of Deutschland anyway, and probably not even there due to cautious politics), and we could all pitch in and buy Tier some beer to do the voice acting like he did in the original TC.

Good point about clips vs. mags I've wondered why that was wrong myself. I've seen a K98 in TC:E, which I believe is clip fed, but it was a custom weapon. I like the rest of the ideas, especially saying away from overdone/arcady elements.

Hi hoak,

you are very welcome to help with the terminology and I will incorporate your suggestions.
The term perk, btw, is and was also used in the role-playing game genre for special/additional character attributes. I am nevertheless very happy with alternative terminology and tried to use ability anyhow. Now the slot system got a bit different anyhow and I guess we have the groups (better names welcome)

Primary weapon addons
*muzzle attachment
*extra magazines
*alternative ammo

Armor
Here the question is which levels are represented and how are they represented. From the game design point of view, I don't want huge differences since all addons are subtle and should be well balanced. My current idea is that all players carry a flak vest or NIJ level I or II per default. Then:
*lightweight (better version of the standard vest)
*improved ( NIJ level IIIA or III)
*tank (NIJ level IV ??? then the current implementation is not enough, or level III if improved were IIIA or only II)

Combat skills
*quick reload
*marksman
*commando

As for the voice acting, my current plan is to strongly reduce the current commands to the few really needed (to be discussed) and to remove the childish ET sounds.
I also wanted to bring back the TC045 profanity system, which somehow doesn't fit, I am not sure. I would compile list of required voice commands and will be looking for 16 male voice actors that record the list in different utterances and send it to me. We will need something like

Specops:

3x american accent
2x british accent
1x mexican accent (some spanish profanity)
1x german accent (some german profanity)
1x french accent (some french profanity)

Terror:

2x russian accents (some russian profanity)
2x polish accents (some polish profanity)
1x irish accent (some local profanity)
1x shottish accent (some local profanity)
1x german accent (some german profanity)
1x french accent (some french profanity)

Well if the game is going to keep it's English interface 'Breach Armor' would be more technically correct then tank, and 'Combat Skills' is much better then 'Perk' with all the baggage it carries.

There have been some great voice Actors among TC Fans over the years, current TC:E work included, though for a para-military operation the SELCALL, MODAT, CTCSS tones are going to be squelched as high frequency sound is very directional and tends to 'leak' from any ear piece.

Automatic "friendly fire" voice chat message would be useful.

An obviously fake/unauthentic/exaggerated accent is very annoying to someone who really has the accent, so if you think you can do all of those different accents, make sure you are at least 98% confident that you can do it accurately (ie you know SEVERAL people with the accent and THEY agree it sounds accurate).

I thought he meant he knew people with authentic accents' who would be willing to do some acting and he'd send it over. But who knows.

And also yeah, authentic accents would obviously be preferred to (even very good) imitations.

Well as a seasoned Sound Desinger, I vote for quality of voice acting, character and timber of the persons voice over a particular accent someone might have or be able to play up...

Someone that sounds like they're: eight years old, just had a horribe bicycle accident, or is worried Mom might hear what they're doing at the microphone probably won't work regardless of how 'authentic' their accent is.

But someone with the nick Piney, probably sounds salty, tough as nails and as close to any Gamer's idea of how a 'real Operator' should sound (regardless of accent) as we're likely to get.

Keep in mind we're going to hear what ever Coroner puts in the game nearly as often as we hear guns fire, if not more so; so my vote is quality over quantity -- and if anyone is too thin skinned to have their work rejected, prolly not a good candidate for the effort.

:D
